Raaka - Raw Chocolate - Bourbon Cask Aged
IT GETS BETTER WITH AGE
The tuxedoed sophisticate in the family. Raaka aged single origin Tanzanian cacao in bourbon casks for two months, creating a deeply nuanced bar with a cocktail-like vibe: oaky and smooth, with a hint of cherry cordial on the finish. Their best selling bar and 2013 Good Food Award Winner.
ORIGIN: Kokoa Kamili, Tanzania
Organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic maple sugar, organic cacao butter.
When Raaka's people make chocolate they're after something that feels the way Raaka sounds: strong, wild, playful, and most of all, different. “Raaka” means “raw” in Finnish. The company does not have any Finish connections or origins, but the cadence of the word captures the essence of their processes and chocolates. The geniuses say that Raaka chocolates are made of unroasted cacao beans, which preserves the bold, bright, and fruitier flavors of the beans. Whatever the case, these chocolates are definitely Raaka-stars in our books and in our tummies.
Bought this thinking that there was actual bourbon inside but when it came then i realise that it was actually aged in a bourbon cask LOL. ok maybe im wrong but thats what it says in the title. It was still good la. the bar a bit small for the price but still worth a try! (4 star cause of the price and lack of alcohol inside)
Hello Elly. We agree ,it can be confusing a bit. Using bourbon cask for aging is a new trend that started in the US (the biggest producer of bourbon) and became popular due to a very distinctive effect on the final taste of chocolate. If you want something that is filled with alcohol you can always try hand-scooped chocolate by Zotter with tequila and scotch whiskey. Those bars are directly infused with quality spirits.
As for the price point, let us slightly disagree. It is not high but the right price of real chocolate. Relatively cheap price of mass-market chocolate bars you can find on the shelves is based on a historically low price of cheap flavourless bulky cacao beans (mostly from West Africa), fair amount of palm oil and the array of preservatives and artificial additives. On the opposite, we work only with those brands that support fair and sustainable practices, exceptional quality due to minimalistic approach towards ingredients and production practices that is reflected in the price of the final product. We already used to the idea that cheap wine is probably not the best option when you want to have a pleasant evening (and harmless morning). It seems like craft chocolate has just started it's journey along that way. Anyway, thanks for shopping with us and we hope to hear from you again. Stay safe and healthy. Say chocolate!

The initial flavours remind me of Original Beans and some Idilio bars (both manufactured by Felchlin). Smooth melt.
