Story
Almost all the cocoa grown in Vanuatu comes from this one island: Malekula. This sparsely populated island is a two-day boat journey from the capital of Port Vila. But the rich volcanic soil here yields a cocoa bean with a complex flavour and hints of cherry, white grape, and citrus that makes the journey worthwhile.
There is no easy way to get to Malekula. It’s either a long boat journey or a plane that flies once – or maybe twice – a week. Most of the island is blanketed in the forest – except for the estate that provides us with the superior cocoa bean that grows in this rich porous volcanic soil.
Although the estate here has attracted outside investors, it is still owned by the local landholders. They make sure that the jobs go to the islanders, with all their local knowledge and expertise. It all makes for a self-contained business that benefits the local community in numerous ways and results in cocoa of the highest calibre.
